Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011
The need for accurate, user-friendly labels is increasing among retailers and consumers alike. For retailers, this is due to a rapid growth in private labels, while consumers are becoming increasingly interested in the origin of their food. The food information on the label helps consumers assess the food product for appropriate use and to make an informed choice. This makes the information on the label essential.
Consequently, there is general legislation with which food product labels in Europe must comply. This is Regulation EU 1169/2011, which pertains to the provision of food-related information to consumers. This regulation is available through EUR-Lex. These legal documents are freely accessible to all through an extensive search system.
In the Netherlands, this regulation is incorporated into the Warenwetbesluit Informatie Levensmiddelen (WIL), a decree pertaining to information regarding food products.
